(Re)Size Your Brain
Ok, I look in the mirrior and I see the skinny, painfully thin, Twiggy Before There Was Twiggy (in the age of TBTWT or Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield time--flesh, flesh and nose cone huge boobs) girl and woman I used to be. This image is imprinted on my brain. So who is that woman who steps on the scales and tops 185? And for god's sake who in the world is that woman in the photos? Me, no way. Since I am mentally still a skinny, awkward girl--so underweight that my knees knocked together when I slept on my side and gave each other bruises, I can of course still eat anything. In fact, I should eat and eat a LOT, because, really as the mirror tells me, I am really really skinny and I need to bulk up.
Unlike many woman, I never dieted--except if you call eating all I possibly could as many times a day as possible to put some flesh on so that my ribs might be covered a bit and my elbows wouldn't accidently cut some unlucky stranger on the subway. So since Twiggy grabbed my 15 minutes, I will just have to be content with reading and writing about others who are dishing "about food, eating, weight and body image" in the new collection of essays edited by Harriet Brown, called "Feed Me". Ballentine issued this book in Feburary.
Lisa Romeo: Self Declared Fat Girl
Lisa's essay, "Plus What?" is one of about 23 that discuss food and nourishment of the body and soul by such other authors as Jane Brody, Brenda Copeland, Jenny Allen. Lisa pokes fun at herself and at the conventions of fleeting fame and fashion's demand that skinny is normal, as she describes her "fat" photo shoot for a magazine spread.
A life long writer, Lisa got her start in equine journalism--who knew there was such a sub -genre. But as she was an equestrian--starting at 14 and ultimately owned five horses and then rode show horses, it was a no-brainer that she would soon begin writing about horses and riding as well. Because of the US Equestrian Team in the 1984 Olympics, she joined a PR firm writing about the team and its doings.
After years in PR in NYC and owning her own NJ PR firm, Lisa is now focusing on her memoir writing. Well, add in those life seasoning events of marriage, child bearing, parents aging and dying and you've got a lot to write about. Now she wants to write in a more "literary fashion." You can friend her on Facebook. Or go to my facebook site and friend me. She is one of my pals.
