Book Review: Feed Me--Lisa Romeo and Her Fleeting 15 Minutes

(Re)Size Your Brain

Ok, I look in the mirrior and I see the skinny, painfully thin, Twiggy Before There Was Twiggy (in the age of TBTWT or Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield time--flesh, flesh and nose cone huge boobs) girl and woman I used to be. This image is imprinted on my brain. So who is that woman who steps on the scales and tops 185? And for god's sake who in the world is that woman in the photos? Me, no way. Since I am mentally still a skinny, awkward girl--so underweight that my knees knocked together when I slept on my side and gave each other bruises, I can of course still eat anything. In fact, I should eat and eat a LOT, because, really as the mirror tells me, I am really really skinny and I need to bulk up.

Unlike many woman, I never dieted--except if you call eating all I possibly could as many times a day as possible to put some flesh on so that my ribs might be covered a bit and my elbows wouldn't accidently cut some unlucky stranger on the subway. So since Twiggy grabbed my 15 minutes, I will just have to be content with reading and writing about others who are dishing "about food, eating, weight and body image" in the new collection of essays edited by Harriet Brown, called "Feed Me". Ballentine issued this book in Feburary.

Lisa Romeo: Self Declared Fat Girl

Lisa's essay, "Plus What?" is one of about 23 that discuss food and nourishment of the body and soul by such other authors as Jane Brody, Brenda Copeland, Jenny Allen. Lisa pokes fun at herself and at the conventions of fleeting fame and fashion's demand that skinny is normal, as she describes her "fat" photo shoot for a magazine spread.

A life long writer, Lisa got her start in equine journalism--who knew there was such a sub -genre. But as she was an equestrian--starting at 14 and ultimately owned five horses and then rode show horses, it was a no-brainer that she would soon begin writing about horses and riding as well. Because of the US Equestrian Team in the 1984 Olympics, she joined a PR firm writing about the team and its doings.

After years in PR in NYC and owning her own NJ PR firm, Lisa is now focusing on her memoir writing. Well, add in those life seasoning events of marriage, child bearing, parents aging and dying and you've got a lot to write about. Now she wants to write in a more "literary fashion." You can friend her on Facebook. Or go to my facebook site and friend me. She is one of my pals.

Read Feed Me for the Emotional Nourishment

"Feed Me" will feed everyone who thinks about bodies, image, weight and food. For a good chuckle and sharp insight, make sure you read Lisa's essay.

Fun, Games and Playdates with Adults--Oh Yes!

Play Dating for Adults

Ok, it's no fair that I have to cart my kid around to all her playdates--now called hanging out--and I don't have the same kind of fun. Well there is a new organization called http://www.playdateus.com/ that is growing like wildfire across the country.

PlayDate was started in 2005 by Imari Harvard, Atlanta resident. He and his wife and other friends were tired of the heavy pickup atmosphere of clubs and bars and wanted to have fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun in a low key setting. Voila! Playdate.  Read article:

Harvard started it in his living room where friends could gather listening to music and playing new and old nostalgic childhood board games as well. Now more than 800 grown up "kids" 40+are not Twittering alone in their own homes, but are out giggling together over  Connect Four or Happy Hippos.

Double Dutch Double Dutch; and dance-off competitions keep local PlayDate settings hopping. Currently there are monthly events in Houston, Seattle, LA, Chicago, Charlotte and other cities.  Double Dutch more...

Cheap Fun and Shortest Pick Up Line

What also good about PlayDate is that it is only $10 at the door and it meets only once a month. While many just go for fun, others can meet and greet as well. the pick up line???....

Wanna Play? Check it out--sounds like lots of fun.
