Adding "Myboast" to the Lexicon
My kid is always saying Mybad when I chide her over some little infraction. So today in the spirit of that new lingo, I am coining Myboast to add a new word to the lexicon.
Boasting is something that women of my age and generation--well lots of them anyway--were NOT supposed to do. We, children of the white segregated South, even in my progressive, racism fighting family, were supposed to be genteel. We glowed instead of sweat. We were to cross our ankles when sitting. We were to be polite and say Yes, m'am and Yes, Sir tio every adult no matter where on the spectrum of skin color. And we were never to call an adult by a solo first name. Even relatives were Cousin/Cud'l so and So, Aunt So and So or Uncle So and So. Unrelated were Miz Liz, or Mr Bob. You can see why Scout in To Kill A Mocking Bird is a great favorite of mine. I grok her. I've been fighting this early training all my life!
Women Speaking Out
A elementary school friend told me once that her shrink told her when she could be rude, she was on the road to health--politeness and female self-effacement being such a part of the social southern code. I think when I can boast easily and without storms of guilt, I will be well and truly as well.
